Two Ways On How To Brew Beer At Home
There is basically to ways of brewing beer at home. The first one is all grain and that is the most difficult one. But that’s the one you can get the best results from. It’s the process where you have to most control over the outcome.
The other one is using malt extract or home brewing kits. Malt extract can be freeze-dried or as a concentrate. The only thing you have to add is special malt and hop. This is a good place to start if you are just learning how to brew beer at home.
And of course you can combine the two techniques – I do that a lot.
Don’t Need Much Equipment When Learning How To Brew Beer At Home
It’s not expensive to start you own brewery at home. You can start out with a basic home brewing kit and that will cost you 100$ – 120$. And that’s a onetime investment. After that you only have to buy the ingredients for the next beer. Of Couse there is a lot of different equipment you can buy, but you don’t have to have when learning how to brew beer at home. In fact, I know a lot of people who brew their own beer who don’t have anything but a basic home brewing kit.
But one thing you should consider to buy extra is a good chiller. The faster you chill down the hot wort the less likely it will get contaminated with unwanted yeast and other microorganism from the air. And with a chiller you can chill down your wort I less than 10 minutes. So in my opinion the only thing you need besides a basic home brewing kit is a chiller and you are ready to learn how to brew beer at home.
How To Brew Beer At Home With Home Brewing Kits
Brewing your own beer at home is easier and cheaper. It will be more fun if your party buddies also hop in. Now the process is no more than few simple steps, with a brewing kit in place. All you have to do is to follow some simple steps and viola!! Your home made drink is ready....
Ingredients:
- Liquid or dried malt extract
- Specialty grains
- Hops
- Yeast (Depending upon the type of beer you brew, it can be selected from kits)
Preparation:
- Use an electric dish washer and sterilize everything that is to be used.
- Clean the brewing equipment using distilled water. If bleach is used, keep in mind it might leave an unwanted taste in your beer, so it is wise to use a food based bleach. The fun part is you are free to add anything you wish and can brew any kind of beer, just enjoy what you are doing.
Brewing:
- Steep any specialty grain in a large pot around 150 degrees F (66C) hot water for about 30 minutes. After removing the grains let them drip.
- Add the malt extract and boil. The hops can be added at desired intervals for various flavors of bitterness and aroma. The best part is that the instructions are clearly present in the kit which makes the process even simpler and fun to do.
- Once the liquid is boiled (wort) it has to be cooled immediately and once 80 degrees F (26C) is reached then move it to a fermenter.
- Splash the wort once before fermentation as yeast needs oxygen. Use a strainer large enough to filter the hops in wort. Add water so the total equals to five liters. Add yeast and close the fermenter with an air-lock, be careful not to use brewer's yeast as this is a dead yeast and sure will not work. Now put that in dark, probably in a refrigerator so that the temperature is consistent. You might notice that the air-lock will start to bubble away in 24-hrs.
Bottling:
- After a week, the bubbling air-lock will reduce to occasional burps. Ha ha...now the time has come for bottling the beverage. Your kit contains some priming sugar or DME (dried malt extract). This helps in carbonating the bottled beer. Boil it by adding some water and later cool it. Now, add it to a clean, sanitized bucket.
- Use clean tubing as a siphon for transferring the beer from fermenter to the bottling bucket which already has the DME solution to it.
- Attach the bottle to your plastic tubing, the other end attaches to the spigot's bottom end.
- Keep you bottles ready. Place the filler so that it reaches the bottom of the bottle. If one bucket method is followed fill the tube with water, let the open end be in the fermented beer. Put the bottle filler in a bottle or the sink so that it acts like a siphon. Do not fill the bottle to the brim; be sure to let some apace above the beer level. Cap the bottle. Repeat the process for all the bottles.
- Let the bottles rest in room temperature for a week or two.
- Refrigerate.
- Call in all your beer buddies, pour your own home brewed beer with a flourish and enjoy!!!!
Some Handy tips:
- If you are a beginner, use a soft drink bottle as they are cheap, easily available and definitely handy. OH, yes do not forget to remove the label lest someone mistakes your lovely beer for a soft drink.
- If you are planning for a long times brewing then go for glass carboys.
- Always maintain a low temperature in the fermenter as you will get a better tasting beer by that.
- Add some ice cubes around the fermenter to keep the temperature low.
Things to keep in mind:
- Keep in mind that boil-overs have to be kept in check when wort is boiled. This has to be kept in check when boiling DME too.
- Turn off the heat before adding extract to the boiling water. The mixture has to be stirred well before turning it on.
- When a glass carboy is used always note that hot wort should not be poured directly as the temperature difference will be broken.
- Check the home brewing laws in your country.
